Obama says timing right for millions to refinance

Declaring “good news” in the midst of an economic meltdown, President Barack Obama on Thursday urged families to take advantage of near-record low mortgage rates by refinancing their home loans. “We are at a time where people can really take advantage of this,” Obama said, seated with a handful of homeowners who have already lowered their bills.

But he also warned people to watch out for scam artists, cautioning, “If somebody is asking you for money up front before they help you with your refinancing, it’s probably a scam.”

Rates on 30-year mortgages inched upward this week but remain near the lowest level in decades, allowing borrowers with strong credit and stable jobs to save money if they refinance.

The average rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rose to 4.87 percent this week, up from 4.78 percent last week, Freddie Mac reported Thursday. That was the lowest in the history of the survey, which dates back to 1971.

Jordan’s locker up for auction

Michael Jordan fans will have a chance to buy one of his Chicago Bulls lockers along with other memorabilia in a charity auction next week.

The Bulls and Hunt Auctions are offering one of two lockers Jordan used at the team’s practice facility in the 1990s during a fundraiser for the team’s nonprofit charity organization April 18 at the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago.

Megan Fox lines up two film projects

Megan Fox is ditching the robots and taking her career to Western and underwater frontiers.

Fox is in final negotiations to star opposite Josh Brolin and John Malkovich in “Jonah Hex,” Warner Bros.’ action Western based on the DC Comics character. She also is attached to star and develop “Fathom,” Fox Atomic’s comic book-based underwater adventure.

In “Hex,” being directed by Jimmy Hayward, Fox will play Leila, a gun-wielding beauty and love interest of Hex (Brolin), a scarred bounty hunter tracking a voodoo practitioner (Malkovich) who wants to raise an army of undead to liberate the South.

Charles Barkley Is Going to Jail

Hope they’ve got XXXXL jumpsuits in AZ, ’cause Charles Barkley is officially going to jail.

Barkley just pled guilty to 2 counts of driving under the influence and pleaded “responsible” to running a stop sign for the December 31 incident in Scottsdale.
Barkley was sentenced to 10 days in jail — but will only do five if he completes an alcohol education program. Barkley was also fined $2,000.

Barkley will begin his sentence on March 21 — but it’s unclear if he will serve time in Arizona’s famed Tent City Jail, where they make the inmates wear pink.

A grand old time with boy toy

It’s Madonna and grandchild.

The Material Girl is the same age as her new Brazilian lover’s grandmother, an ex-girlfriend says. Jesus Pinto da Luz, the 22-year-old blue- eyed model Madonna met on a photo shoot, has a granny who is about 50. Madonna turns 51 in August.

The hunk’s mortified mom, Cristiane Regina da Silva - who is 14 years younger than Madonna - believes the pop diva has kidnapped her son, snatching him away to a New York love nest and controlling his every move.

Madonna and Jesus spent the Christmas holiday in the Maldives, where her public-relations people confiscated his cellphone, accord ing to the Brazilian media.
